in like a lion

The other day I told someone that I sort of feel like it has been winter my entire life.  I mean, I remember it was hot when I moved back to Boston and I slept with a fan and then it was fall and we only started getting a lot of snow pretty recently, but seriously, it is just so much that it is sort of overwhelming. I bet everyone not in Boston is sick of hearing about snow, but we're sick of living with it, so we don't ever shut up about that.

But really, it is March now, and eventually all that snow will disappear.  I keep trying to fix landmarks in my mind so we can tell stories about how high the snow was - "it covered those swings, Oliver!" we'll tell him years from now.  "It was as high as the porch, and over here, you couldn't even see out that window" And then we'll bore him with pictures and he'll think, "wow, you guys were so young" because that's you think when you see old pictures of people.  (We got another 1-2 inches of snow on Sunday night, which might be why we're still obsessing over it some more.)

I recently started running again.  It's been a long time, thanks to pregnancy and then having a baby just before winter.  I finally decided that the snow is here to stay for a while, so I used a treadmill (which I sort of hate, but it's pretty easy to get a quick run in on that). It makes me miss all the runs I used to take along the seafront back in Eastbourne.  It was the perfect running place... but the treadmill in a basement is fine for now, too.  This summer, though! I can't wait to introduce Oliver to the ocean. And grass and swings and sand and dirt and all the things he was too tiny to appreciate back in September.

nyc

The best part about this week was that it ended with a trip to NYC on Friday to Saturday. We had delicious food and so much fun, despite the cold weather and the fact that a Saturday evening snowstorm meant it look us 6 hours to drive home instead of a little over 3.

It was a good week, though. Last weekend we had more snow (surprise) and so we were snowed in with Sam's parents. We played some games and enjoyed the snow from inside. We also had a fun little breakfast trip to a local diner one morning. We came home on Monday and my brother arrived that day, too, visiting on his week off from university in Toronto. He was suitably and gratifiyingly impressed by all our snow. It is really fun to see him with Oliver. We had a quiet week spending time with him. On Wednesday I went to my first ever yoga class and actually really enjoyed it. I felt all sore the next day but I think I'll go back because it makes a nice complement to all the running I do (or used to do and will hopefully start up again when the snow melts and the sidewalks are useable).

On Thursday, my aunt drove down from Vermont for a weekend visit. We got up early on Friday to drive down to NYC. Oliver was so well-behaved on the drive, so we only stopped once, at a fortuitously located IKEA in Conmecticut. I fed Oliver while everyone else looked around, and then we got $1 cinnamon buns just for fun. In NYC, we had a lot of fun. It was surreal to be somewhere with barely any snow, and I kept commenting on how easy it was to push the stroller along giant sidewalks totally devoid of snow. We had amazing Vietnamese food for lunch; I had a lemongrass pork banh mi that was absolutely perfect. Then we did lots of walking around in the freezing cold, eventually ending up on Wall St and then visiting the 9/11 memorial. It was sad and awful and real and pretty weird to leave and realize that 9/11 was so long ago (14 years!) and what a terrible thing it was. It was really late by then - around 9 - as we made our way back to my great-aunt's where we were staying, so we just stopped quickly at this awesome Japanese place for dinner. We shared a Kobe beef burger and two sushi rolls at this place that was sort of fast food/cafeteria esque, but delicious and beautiful. It reminded me a little of places I ate in London, especially this one Japanese place on Tottenham Court road, near UCL. We got some hot chocolate mix on the way home and then has that back at that apartment before going to bed.

On Saturday, we had breakfast at a bagel place near the apartment (on the Upper East Side) that were delicious and felt very New Yorky. It was a bit warmer so we took the subway down to Soho to walk around there. We ended up going to Union Square and visiting the farmer's market there, where we bought hot apple cider to drink. We wandered around and looked in some fun stores and eventually ended up in Chinatown. We were looking for a place to have dim sum, and ended up at a tiny restaurant that served amazing food (but not dim sum style). It was sort of starting to snow by then so wea made our way back to our car and then began the long, long six hour drive home on horrible roads. There were so many accidents on the way that it was really scary, and we stopped twice so I could feed Oliver, but we made it eventually. Then we had Indian food as my brother's last meal before be flew back to Toronto early this morning.

another week

This winter is getting to feel ridiculously long.  I think it's a combination of being stuck inside a lot (due to sharing a car with my husband and there being too much snow for us to walk anywhere) and not a lot to do with a baby, anyway.  We keep thinking of things he'll enjoy when he's a bit older, like trips to a museum or farm, but he's not really ready for that.  He can't even play in all the feet of snow we have accumulated outside.  (Maybe next year? Hopefully we'll get a little snow when he can actually enjoy it, but he might be too small for that for most of next winter, too.)  Anyway, we had yet another snowfall last Monday and more today. Then there is more snow predicted for tomorrow, too.

Sunday was the Superbowl, which was fun since we won. Go pats and all that. I watched the very end of the first half, when Seattle tied it up, and then the halftime show (weird) and some boring commercials. Such is our commitment to American sports that we turned it off after that because it seemed too stressful. On Monday, we got lots of snow, we stayed inside and Oliver practiced rolling over (he did it twice and now seems to have lost interest in ever trying again...but we'll see.  At least he's now starting to enjoy being on his stomach for brief periods of time).  Sam had the day off so he didn't have to worry about braving the slushy roads.  I did lots of shoveling and it's getting pretty difficult, because our snow banks are so high that it's hard to find room to put the snow.  I finished The Bone Clocks and really loved it.  Now I'm re-reading David Mitchell's other books.  On Tuesday, the roads were still pretty bad, and I had to go run some errands (just little things, like mailing a package) and probably drove everyone on the road crazy with my cautious driving.

On Wednesday, Sam went into work early so worked a 12-hour shift (8-8) and came home exhausted.  He made up for it on Thursday by coming home early after a training session, so we got to spend some time together, listening to music, helping Oliver get the proper grip on his toys, things like that.  We had another small snowfall on Thursday morning so Sam also did some more shoveling. On Friday, it was seriously cold outside, so we had another quiet day at home.  I did laundry (which I do so much of now), read, and marinated some chicken so that we could have chicken fajitas for dinner. Maybe not the most obvious cold-weather food, but we've had a lot of soup lately. We actually had a little debate over whether or not soup is a full meal on its own, because apparently some people don't think it is.  I think it's the best thing ever - so easy, delicious, healthy, and fun to experiment with.  I mean, you can basically make soup out anything.  Is that enough rambling about soup?  Probably.

This weekend was still pretty cold, and we are enjoying yet more snow today. We had a quiet evening with Oliver on Saturday night, enjoying a stir-fry for dinner and then a little family movie night (which Oliver slept right through). I've always loved winter, but I'm starting to look forward to spring and seeing green grass again.

first of the month

Oh, February. This year is going quickly. Last week already feels like so long ago.

We had Oliver's four month appointment last Monday, where we found out he was just over two feet tall and weighs 16 pounds 2 ounces. He got shots and was fussy all day. It just kills me, watching him coo at the doctor, only to start howling when the shots come. Sorry, baby. Tuesday was the famous blizzard of 2015, giving us all a snow day and lots of shoveling. It also meant we were pretty much house-bound the rest of the week. Sam lost his car keys on Wednesday, but luckily they were turned in on Thursday. I started the latest David Mitchell book, finally, and I've been loving it. This weekend was also pretty quiet - we did some shopping, watched a film last night, and are getting ready for the Superbowl tonight.

snow day

The infamous blizzard of 2015 may have been a let-down in some states, but not here in Boston.  We got easily over two feet of snow on Monday to Tuesday, with probably closer to 30 or 32 inches.  Plus, right now it is snowing (lightly) again.  Where is it all supposed to go? It's already impossible to see at intersections or when backing out of our driveway. Still, it was a good day. We didn't lose power and no one had to go into work (there was a travel ban on Tuesday, so things were pretty much shut down).

Probably more pictures than anyone ever wants to see, but it is pretty surreal to see so much snow everywhere. Luckily it was light and easy to shovel, and since we had power and plenty of food and heat, we were able to enjoy a cozy snow day at home.

our week

January is kind of a long month. I mean, surely it should be over by now? I keep getting sick and worrying over giving it to Oliver, and it's so cold that it's hard to leave the house, and my skin is really dry, and then on Saturday we got so much beautiful snow and that kind of made me like January again.

Last weekend we spent the night at my in-law's since the roads were pretty icy and dangerous on Sunday night. We played phase 10 and ate chicken pot pie so it made for a pretty good time. On Monday, my aunt came over with her kids and they had fun climbing on Sam and playing computer games with him. We are chilli for dinner and it was delicious. The rest of the week was kind of boring - Oliver turned four months old, we had some slightly warmer days that I took advantage of by going out for walks with him, and I started getting another cough around mid-week. He also had an unbelievable diaper, the kind that require two baths to recover from. On Friday we had a nice trip to IKEA. Oliver was so well-behaved and happy. He sat in his car seat almost the whole time, sucking his fingers and getting loads of attention. We got the cheap, popular IKEA high chair for him (exciting!) and some other things, and no one got mad or cried or anything.

Saturday we got loads of snow; making the roads dangerous for Sam going to work but beautiful for the rest of us. We set up the high chair and stuck Oliver in it for fun (even though we won't start solids for a little longer) and began the process of moving Oliver into his own room. Maybe.

another week

This week was long and busy and overwhelming and fun. Aren't holiday weeks always like that? It started with Oliver's two month check-up on Monday, where he weighed in at 12 pounds 9 ounces and got several vaccines. He then slept all day while Sam and I cuddled him and watched the first two Lord of the Rings movies. On Tuesday, my sister flew in from college and my mom and I met her at the airport and spent the day in Boston, shopping, before going to Harvard Square for delicious Vietnamese food in the evening. On Wednesday, we got loads of snow so we abandoned the house we were staying at (which they told us to do) and did snowy day things, like eating tomato soup, as well as some Thanksgiving prep, like making refrigerator roll dough.

Thursday was Thanksgiving. We had 36 people over and more food than even that many could eat. There was also pie and pumpkin cheesecake and lots of people to cuddle Oliver and it was overwhelming and fun. On Friday, people came over again. There was crafting and muffin-baking and turkey noodle soup for dinner. Saturday we put up Christmas decorations, including the tree, made gingerbread cookies, and then went to see the latest Hunger Games movie, which I enjoyed. Today my sister flew back to college and we did some more holiday decorating, which is one of my favorite times of year. Bring on December and Christmas!

yesterday...

Yesterday it snowed for about twelve straight hours, giving us around two inches of snow on the ground...and it's still there today! This is pretty unusual for our small, seaside town, or so we're told. (Everyone is always trying to convince us the weather is nice here, even when it is freezing and hailing, or when it rains for a month straight without stopping.) Luckily my husband's bus was running so he could go off to work today. As much as he'd like a day off, he can't miss too many days.

So we had a cozy Sunday, with just one hour of church, and then a long, lazy afternoon in front of a fire, watching the snow fall. We talked about men's shoes, immigration, weddings, and babies with our friends. And how it's supposed to keep on snowing all week... I hope that's true! I love how soft and quiet everything looks when it is covered in snow. I couldn't resist taking a few pictures with my phone as I walked to church yesterday, so here's what our Sunday morning looked like:

snow!

Yesterday, we finally got some snow. Only a little, but it was enough that my husband  was sent home early (they are pretty bad at snow here) and we got to eat chicken noodle soup and warm bread. It was delicious. I really love snowy days, even if it is barely enough to cover the ground. Plus we got to spend some time on our puzzle and watch a few episodes of 30 Rock. It was a great way to spend a Friday afternoon. Now we might get more snow tomorrow, so overall, this weekend has been pretty great. Not to mention our Christmas package that finally arrived on Thursday. We even got chocolate chips! Pretty sure I need to make some cookies next week.
